If You Give Up On Your Dreams, What Is The Alternative?

(Last Updated On: June 7, 2019)

We all have dreams.

Some of us wake up in the morning living their dreams, and some continue to work for theirs. But some of us have tired of trying, not because we have forgotten about our dreams. We just learned to set them aside. Perhaps, because our dreams have turned into ambiguous and powerless wishes. Or maybe because our dreams have led us to stop believing, to lose hope and faith.

It is tempting to quit when everything seems to be against you—the people around you, environmental circumstances, or even yourself

We all have family members, friends, colleagues and even strangers who have discouraged us to pursue our dreams. They often say our dreams are too unrealistic and unattainable, as if they know fully what we are capable of. Although perhaps, they are merely deflecting the fears that also consume them. Or they just secretly want you to be in a well-protected comfort zone, just as they are.

There are also circumstances that seem to impede us from achieving our dreams, or so we think they do. We are too poor for our dreams. We are not beautiful enough to be on stage, to own the spotlight. We are too busy being a breadwinner to be a winner. We also hold our social status responsible for the dreams we have chosen not to chase. We allow our perceived gender roles to restrict us in creating the life we aspire to live, so that we can let centuries old norms to prevail. We choose to live by mediocrity because it makes everything simple.

Sometimes it is even more difficult to keep our dreams alive, when we have to protect them from ourselves. We tell ourselves we can’t do it. We dream big, and we know the possibilities are countless. But we scare ourselves digging into the wild. We often tend to choose to preserve the status quo because we are afraid to be vulnerable. We limit our imagination because we don’t believe that it will become our reality.

The road to our dreams will most likely be long, challenging, exhausting and unexpected. Oftentimes, our dreams will also be at odds with our current status, realities and resources. But the truth is we decide what is possible. We decide whether or not we let regrets replace our dreams. We decide if we want to live with passion, or live only to survive. Because, our dreams will always be valid no matter who we are and where we are from.

Yes, it is easier said than done. But, please don’t give up on your dreams.

Don’t give up on your dreams because it is not right to give up on yourself. You are meant to live a meaningful and purposeful life. Your fears and limitations exist to enable you to strive to be a better version of yourself, and certainly to reach your dreams.

Don’t give up on your dreams because you deserve to experience happiness and success. As you might have been reminded several times already, you are closer to achieving your dreams than you think. Don’t let the trials inhibit you from getting through your breakthroughs.

Don’t give up on your dreams because you are an inspiration to many.Whether you are aware of it or not, believe of it or not, what you do actually inspires others. When you talk about your dreams and the challenges you surpassed to be where you are now, you incite hope, faith and possibility. You are setting a good example to your family, friends, colleagues, and if you have children (or might have them some day) you become their role model.

Don’t give up on your dreams because they also serve as learning opportunities. As you endeavor towards achieving your dreams, you will discover more about yourself—your skills will be honed, your talents will be discovered, and your capabilities will be developed. Your dreams can shape who you are, and where you will be in life.

Don’t give up on your dreams because you are alive and you can make things happen. You are destined to reach heights. You are more than prepared to triumph.

Yes, it is difficult at the moment. You might be extremely exhausted. But please continue to dream in colors, and never ever give up.
